LOCKDOWN DIARY

This project was the last part of the Drawing module. The focal point was the Covid-19 pandemic. We were asked to produce a piece of work at least eight pages long (including a front and back cover), giving an honest account of our personal experience coming out of lockdown.

BUILDING A CONCEPT

Picture

Lockdown saw many people's lives being turned upside down. In all honesty, though it didn't change my daily routine massively.

As someone who's a bit of a hermit anyway, lockdown didn't seem much different for me. I don't feel like I have a typical experience of it; what made things memorable for me personally was the growth I had to do.
The pandemic hit almost directly as I recovered from 14 years of illness. The circumstances during those years meant that I was unable to study or work; it was ironic that as soon as I was in the clear to do so, the country was thrown into lockdown. I didn't really mind, but I was confused - I felt like I didn't know myself. After years of an illness being your whole identity, it's difficult to know who you are without it. I had to do a lot of soul-searching to find myself, and re-recognise my identity - in a sense, I came out of my own personal lockdown.

THUMBNAILING

Picture

After building a basic storyline, I mocked some thumbnails and separated key points into a 'beginning, middle and end' format. My experience, albeit in my own head, actually did have a visible three-part plot, which was ideal for translating into a comic.

After drawing up rough thumbnails, I wrote a script and began to integrate everything.

THE FINAL COMIC

Unfinished.
