The 'Protest Pack' project tasked us with choosing any issue - global, local, whatever - and making a pack of protest materials in response. Many protest-worthy issues came to mind for this project. I did consider a few of these (as seen in my notes) but in the end I risked going for an unorthodox idea I had.
In hindsight, knowing how difficult things were whilst trying to complete this project, I wish I had chosen an easier route. This was one of those things that was fully formed in my mind but didn't make it out in one piece - at least not as I'd planned it. Despite it not going my way, it was too late to change course.
I will perhaps revisit this project at a later date when I feel more able.
NOTES & RESEARCH
My concept was a bit odd in terms of the protest issue being a future one. The idea behind this was to imagine an issue that could potentially arise within a few years time, to give it a sort of urgent and dystopian feel. I tried to take the Extinction Rebellion and climate crisis protests and bend them into a concept I dubbed the New Age Rebellion - a future sub-group of the Extinction Rebellion with the belief that humans must "devolve" out of our modern ways if we are to survive. It's difficult to explain in few words, so I've added my conceptual notes below.
Regardless, the themes of the issue were primarily climate-related with a focus on human impact.
REFERENCE IMAGES
The reference pictures I collected for inspiration were mainly of protests and relevant materials; signs, banners, posters, badges, etc. I also saved a few examples of logo and icon design, and I was particularly keen on incorporating some sort of propaganda vibe into any posters I produced.
THUMBNAILING
To have icons and symbols I could use in the protest materials, I had to design these first. Using ideas from my initial notes combined with inspiration from the reference bank, I made up an analogue sheet of concepts. These were then moved to a digital platform to refine and finalise.
original analogue brainstorm
I ran heavily with the mosquito idea in an attempt to infer humanity's parasitic nature on Earth. I also liked the idea of man's evolutionary line-up ending in this mosquito, to convey that humans have turned into parasites instead of mutual symbiotes. Tweaking the mosquito/parasite idea lead to the syringe imagery; paired with dull, dead colours for the planet, this was an attempt to show the life being drained from Earth.

FINAL DESIGNS
I really didn't get half as far as I wanted to with this. I had so much more I wanted to do with it, but due to external circumstances I couldn't manage to finish it all. Without the posters and flyers and such I had planned to create for this project, it no longer makes as much sense as it should. Below are the finals I managed to finish - a main logo, an embroidered patch and a sticker pack.
